We can all probably remember a difficult math class and how long it took for certain concepts to “stick.” During the summer months, that hard work can be lost very quickly without regular practice. Most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months.
Mathematics lessons and activities will be offered to students, fourth through sixth grades. The goal of the math initiative is for students to maintain grade level equivalency throughout the summer months. Students’ problem solving and reasoning skills will be improved through the practical application of mathematical skills in real-world situations (“mathematics in action”). A computer program – First in Math – will be used to provide students with individual engagement in math, which is designed to strengthen problem-solving, reasoning and math communication skills.
